ArtPrize Entry: untitled abstract by Violet Whitaker

Violet Whitaker’s untitled abstract showing at HopCat is a shock to the senses, waking one up from a state of slumber. I recently chatted with the 2008 Kendall graduate at the ArtPeers meet and greet on the lawn of Mangiamo’s.

She describes her piece as “psychedelic” and says that abstract art speaks to everyone whether male or female young or old, “it is truly everyone’s art.” Violet told me she worked on this piece for over a year and it is the largest scale painting she has ever done. When asked about the color choices for the painting, violet told me she is attracted to primary colors and likes working with complimentary color schemes. Violet reports that she likes to think of it as a more intricate version of an ink blot image, where anything that one can imagine can be found in the painting.

This quote was taken from Violet’s Facebook page, “Art is my life: it devours me every day; it shapes me so I can in turn shape the spaces i inhabit. for this I am infinitely grateful.” Check out her piece showing at HopCat (25 Ionia at the corner of Ionia and Weston) and be devoured.

You can also see her drawings as a part of ArtPeers at the Green Well 924 Cherry St SE.

Thank you Grace. This article was great. You encapsulated it better than I could have.
