With some personal connections and a little smooth talking, I got a very rare sneak peek at the creation that has been hidden from the public inside a semi-truck for weeks.
Award winning ice sculptor and author Derek Maxfield, co-founder of Ice Sculptures LTD., is not only creating an amazing underwater scene using only colored ice, but will be featuring live fire and ice demonstrations as part of his ArtPrize entry. One thing that sets Derek and his ArtPrize entry apart from others is that his biggest challenge will be trying to get his entry to last the entire 20 days of the competition! Entering a perishable piece, the preparations and logistics of exhibiting his entry have been much more labor intensive and expensive than crafting the actual artwork.
He will be showing his piece in the Gerald R. Ford Museum’s parking lot in a giant freezer truck complete with double paneled heated glass to preserve the artwork all while making it comfortable for people to come and view it.
“Fire and Ice” performing acts include the Knotty Bits Sideshow complete with fire eating and smashing blocks of ice on a man’s chest with a sledgehammer all while laying on a bed of nails. Master Carve Dan Rebholz from Chicago will help with other daily performances.

Thanks for the post Jessa! This was already on my ‘must see’ list but after reading this quote, “smashing blocks of ice on a man’s chest with a sledgehammer all while laying on a bed of nails”, well… who wants to say they missed that!?!
OMG! I can’t believe that is all ice. How did he get such brilliant colors? I’m going to make sure I go see this right away just in case it melts.
